It's always good to be one step ahead and predict the British & Asian fashion trends. As a result, l'm predicting the return of velvet jacket suits and velvet blazers Autumn and Winter 2014.
My sister and l went for a wonder in the fabric shops to look for loose velvet fabrics. Most of the velvet we found was plain with no embroidery or patterns. It made me think, you can always buy neck pieces and various haberdashery to give it character however, we were on a mission to find Gul Ahmed style, silk and velvet fabric to make kaftans and coats.
Also l found some UK Asian fashion high street Memsaab's shop window display in Bury Park, Luton added simple casual velvet salwaar kameez, long kameezs and kurtas.
If your not a fan of the designs not to worry Memsaab do sell the velvet silk style fabrics, as seen below on the far left mannequin.
For personal experience of working with velvet the fabric doesn't sit as great as silk and velvet combination for our kaftan, kamzee or coat.
After visiting three fabric shops we were in luck…
Yes, velvet silk fabrics in all different colours and l had a surge of ideas were rushing through my mind. Sid couldn't image anything, she never did have an imagination so that’s were l come in to visual and advice her what will and won't work from a designing element.
The secret is to be inspired by other designer collections and what factors you need to consider to create your own flawless piece. Even your own personalised Gul Ahmed coat, tailor a simple long coat but maybe one size bigger than a tailored jacket. Most of Gul Ahmed’s coats in his velvet collection are not fitted or tailored but one size bigger - very stylish.
Plus tight is out of fashion but laying is key in this autumn and winter 2014 and don’t forget to add a subtle boarder. Your velvet jacket should act as a statement piece in your outfit.
To create my favourite Gul Ahmed purple garment, why not try creating a kaftan style coat and add ”vienna flanged piping cord” round the waist. Add a matching boarder from silk fabric to give it wow affect.
